Comparison

Which degree is actually different from which?

Most Nepali students choose between two or three programs that sound almost identical. The prospectuses do not help, because every college describes every degree as industry-focused and career-oriented. Below is what actually separates them: the entrance you have to clear, the credit load, and the kind of student each one rewards.

Computing degrees

Five programs, three universities, and a great deal of overlap. The differences that actually matter are the mathematics load, how hard the entrance is, and whether the transcript travels.

Program University Entrance Structure Credits Best suited to
BSc CSIT Tribhuvan University TU IOST entrance — 100 MCQs 8 semesters 126 credit hours Students who enjoyed mathematics at +2 and want the theoretical depth that makes later specialisation — machine learning, distributed systems, security research — actually accessible. If you intend to apply for a master's abroad, this is the strongest computing transcript Tribhuvan University issues.
BCA Tribhuvan University TU FoHSS BCA entrance — 100 marks 8 semesters 126 credit hours Students who want to write software professionally without a mathematics-first curriculum, and students from +2 Management who studied Computer Science — BCA is one of the few computing degrees that accepts them. The internship requirement means graduates typically leave with real workplace experience attached to their CV.
BITM Tribhuvan University CMAT — Central Management Admission Test 8 semesters 126 credit hours Students who want to sit between engineering and business — the business analyst, product owner and IT consultant track. If you like technology but do not want to write code for a living, BITM is the most direct Nepali degree for that.
BCSIT Pokhara University Pokhara University entrance test 8 semesters 126 credit hours Students who want a computing degree with a semester system and smaller cohorts than TU can offer, and who value that PU colleges generally publish results on schedule — a practical advantage if you are applying abroad to a deadline.
BIT Purbanchal University Purbanchal University entrance examination 8 semesters 126 credit hours Students who did not clear the TU or PU computing entrances but are serious about an IT career, and students in eastern Nepal who want to study close to home rather than relocating to Kathmandu.

Think twice about BSc CSIT if

The mathematics load is real, and it is where most dropouts happen: discrete maths, numerical methods and statistics are compulsory, not electives. If mathematics was your weakest +2 subject, BCA covers similar career ground with a lighter theoretical burden. The entrance is also the most competitive of TU's computing intakes, and seats at the strong colleges fill from the first priority list.

Think twice about BCA if

You intend to pursue a research master's or move into machine learning. BCA's lighter theory core means you will need to backfill algorithms and mathematics independently. Also check who actually teaches the practical papers at your chosen college — BCA quality varies more between colleges than any other TU computing degree.

Think twice about BITM if

You want to be a strong engineer. BITM's technical core is real but shallower than BSc CSIT's, and graduates competing for pure software roles are usually up against candidates with deeper computer science. The degree rewards people who genuinely want both halves, and penalises people who wanted computing and chose this for the easier entrance.

Think twice about BCSIT if

Cost is a constraint. PU-affiliated colleges are consistently more expensive than TU equivalents for a broadly similar computing syllabus. The PU name is also less recognised outside Nepal than TU's.

Think twice about BIT if

You are optimising for employer recognition in Kathmandu. Purbanchal's computing degrees are less familiar to valley recruiters, so graduates typically need a stronger portfolio to compensate. Check your college's actual lab facilities before committing — provision varies widely across Purbanchal affiliates.

Management degrees

The Tribhuvan University management family confuses more students than any other group in Nepal, largely because the syllabus overlap is high and the delivery differs completely.

Program University Entrance Structure Credits Best suited to
BBA Tribhuvan University CMAT — Central Management Admission Test 8 semesters 120 credit hours Students aiming at Nepal's banking, FMCG and development sectors, and anyone who expects to run a business. The cohort matters as much as the syllabus here — BBA classes are where a lot of Nepali professional networks start, which is a genuine reason to weigh college reputation heavily.
BBS Tribhuvan University No entrance examination at most constituent campuses Annual examination system 120 credit hours Students who need to earn while they study, and anyone for whom cost is the deciding factor — BBS is the most affordable recognised bachelor degree in Nepal by a wide margin. It is also the standard qualification behind a large share of Nepal's accounting and banking workforce.
BBM Tribhuvan University CMAT — Central Management Admission Test 8 semesters 120 credit hours Students who intend to start or join a family business rather than enter corporate employment. The entrepreneurship weighting is genuine, and several colleges attach incubation support to it.

Think twice about BBA if

You want depth in a single discipline. BBA is deliberately broad, and graduates targeting specialised finance or analytics roles often end up adding a professional qualification such as ACCA or CFA afterwards. If you already know you want accounting, going straight to ACCA may cost less time overall.

Think twice about BBS if

You need structure to stay on track. The annual system means one set of examinations a year, little continuous assessment, and campuses where attendance is loosely enforced — completion rates are markedly lower than in semester programs. Results can also be delayed, which matters if you are working to a timeline for postgraduate applications abroad.

Think twice about BBM if

You are targeting multinational or banking graduate schemes. Recruiters in Nepal recognise BBA more readily than BBM, fairly or not, and BBM's smaller alumni base gives you a thinner network to draw on.

Engineering degrees

Both routes go through the same IOE entrance and both end in Nepal Engineering Council registration. The choice is about the market you want to work in.

Program University Entrance Structure Credits Best suited to
BE Computer Tribhuvan University IOE entrance examination — rank-based seat allocation 8 semesters 138 credit hours Students who want the licensed engineer route and the hardware-software combination that pure computing degrees do not teach. Nepal Engineering Council registration matters for public-sector and infrastructure work, and it is a genuine differentiator that BSc CSIT and BCA cannot offer.
BE Civil Tribhuvan University IOE entrance examination — rank-based seat allocation 8 semesters 138 credit hours Students drawn to Nepal's infrastructure and hydropower build-out, and anyone who wants a licensed profession with a clear path into consulting practice. Civil remains the most portable Nepali engineering degree for work in the Gulf and Southeast Asia.

Think twice about BE Computer if

You only want to write software. BE Computer spends significant time on circuits, electronics and engineering mathematics that a web or application developer will never use. The IOE entrance is also the most competitive in Nepal — preparing for it costs a year for many candidates.

Think twice about BE Civil if

You expect a desk job from day one. Early civil careers are site-based, often outside the Kathmandu valley, with demanding conditions and modest starting pay. The domestic market is also cyclical and tied to public capital spending, which has been uneven.

How to actually decide

Three questions settle most of these choices, and none of them are about the syllabus.

Can you clear the entrance? Be realistic rather than optimistic. IOE and the TU IOST entrance both filter hard, and a year spent on entrance preparation is a year of earnings foregone. If your +2 mathematics was weak, the programs that de-emphasise mathematics are not a consolation prize — they lead to largely the same jobs.

What can you afford for four years? Not the first instalment — the whole degree, including the semesters where you might have to repeat a paper. Nepali students drop out over money far more often than over difficulty.

Where do you want to be at 25? If the answer involves a master's abroad, transcript strength and result timeliness matter more than the college's placement claims. If it involves working in Nepal immediately, the alumni network and the internship pipeline matter more than the university's name.

One thing worth saying plainly: the difference between two colleges teaching the same degree is usually larger than the difference between two degrees. Visit the campus, ask which faculty teach the practical papers, and ask to speak to a final-year student without an admissions officer in the room.
