Bachelor of Civil Engineering
Overview
Civil engineering covers the planning, design, construction and maintenance of the built and natural environment — roads, bridges, hydropower, water supply, buildings and irrigation. Tribhuvan University's Institute of Engineering runs Nepal's largest civil program across Pulchowk, Thapathali, Paschimanchal and affiliated campuses, with field survey camps and a final-year project.
What the syllabus covers
- Engineering mathematics, mechanics and strength of materials
- Surveying, with residential field camps
- Structural analysis and reinforced concrete design
- Geotechnical engineering and foundation design
- Water resources, hydropower and irrigation engineering
- Transportation engineering and a final project
Who it suits
Students drawn to Nepal's infrastructure and hydropower build-out, and anyone who wants a licensed profession with a clear path into consulting practice. Civil remains the most portable Nepali engineering degree for work in the Gulf and Southeast Asia.
Think twice if
You expect a desk job from day one. Early civil careers are site-based, often outside the Kathmandu valley, with demanding conditions and modest starting pay. The domestic market is also cyclical and tied to public capital spending, which has been uneven.
BE Civil compared to BE Computer
Both are NEC-licensed IOE degrees with the same entrance. Civil has broader domestic demand tied to infrastructure and hydropower; computer engineering has higher starting salaries and more remote-work optionality. Entrance ranks for computer engineering are typically more competitive.
Eligibility and entrance
+2 Science with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, minimum 45% aggregate, plus a qualifying rank in the IOE entrance examination.
