The Reality of Studying Engineering in Nepal

Engineering in Nepal is not what entrance-prep culture sells. An honest look at the four years, the syllabus, and what you actually graduate with.

Before the entrance exam, engineering is sold to you as a destination. Crack the exam, get the seat, and the rest supposedly takes care of itself.

Then you arrive, and the four years turn out to be a different thing entirely — not worse, but not what was advertised either.

This post is the honest version. I’m writing it as someone who went through it, not as someone recruiting you into it.

The Syllabus Is Older Than You Think

The single most common complaint, and it’s a fair one: large parts of the engineering syllabus have not been meaningfully updated in a long time — we’re talking a decade or more in places.

What this means practically: the degree gives you a foundation and a credential. It does not hand you current industry skills. Those you go and get yourself, in parallel, on your own time.

That is not a reason to skip engineering. It is a reason to stop expecting the syllabus to be the whole education.

What The Four Years Actually Look Like

The Gap Between Marks and Ability

One pattern shows up every year, in every batch: the people with the best results are not automatically the people who can build things, and the people who can build things are not automatically topping the exams.

The system measures one thing. The job market measures another. Knowing that early is an advantage.

What Nobody Warns You About

So Is It Worth It?

Yes — with a condition attached.

Engineering in Nepal is worth it if you treat the degree as a floor rather than a ceiling. The students who come out of four years in a strong position are, almost without exception, the ones who were building something on the side the whole time.

The ones who struggle are usually the ones who did exactly what was asked and nothing more. That is not a moral failing. It is just what this system rewards.
