Nepal's New National Education Policy 2081 – What Students Need to Know
The Government of Nepal has approved the National Education Policy 2081 with major changes to curriculum, grading, and vocational training integration.
The Government of Nepal has officially approved the National Education Policy 2081, introducing sweeping reforms across all levels of education from basic school to higher education.
Key Changes in the New Policy
1. Competency-Based Curriculum
The new policy shifts from rote learning to a competency-based curriculum at the school level. Students will be assessed on their ability to apply knowledge rather than just recall it.
2. Vocational Integration at +2
Starting 2082, all +2 schools must offer at least one vocational/technical subject alongside the academic stream. This is aimed at addressing graduate unemployment.
3. Digital Literacy as Core Subject
Digital literacy and computer fundamentals will become compulsory subjects from Grade 4 onwards across all schools — government and private.
4. Credit Transfer System
Universities must implement a credit transfer system allowing students to move between institutions and even disciplines within the first year without losing credits.
5. Revised Grading System
The grading scale for +2 level will change from the current letter-based system to a GPA-based system (4.0 scale) aligned with international standards.
